The Air and Waste Management Association-Philippine Section (AWMA-PS) and the Partnership for Clean Air (PCA) invite you to participate in the “Lectures on Air Pollution and Its Health Effects” on 25 July 2007 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at the New Horizon Hotel, near the corner of EDSA and Boni Avenue, Mandaluyong City. The program and registration form is attached.
Air Pollution, Health, and Poverty in Asia
With the recent publication by the World Health Organization of it Global Burden of Disease project and its worldwide Air Quality Guidelines there has been increased attention to high levels of air pollution in Asia (and other parts of the world) as well as growing evidence of significant effects on children, the elderly, and other sensitive populations. Of special concern for developing Asia have been recent studies by the Health Effects Institute (HEI) and others that have found that the poor are especially susceptible to air pollution’s effects; with the potential for increased childhood disease, hospitalization, lost work days, and premature mortality.
To build the strongest possible science base for decisions, HEI has been implementing the Public Health and Air Pollution in Asia program (or PAPA), a project of CAI-Asia which is working with scientists in India, Thailand, China and Vietnam to conduct high quality studies of local effects of air pollution and health.
Most recently, HEI has been implementing a special study of air pollution, poverty and health in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, under ADB TA 4714.
This presentation will summarize some of what we know about air pollution and health and describe the important new results forthcoming from PAPA and especially its work in Vietnam.
Dan Greenbaum, President and CEO, Health Effects Institute
One of the speakers is Daniel Greenbaum, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Health Effects Institute (HEI). HEI is a nonprofit corporation based in the US and chartered in 1980 as an independent research organization to provide high-quality, impartial, and relevant science on the health effects of air pollution.
HEI has funded over 250 studies in North America, Europe, and Asia that have produced important research to inform decisions on carbon monoxide, air toxics, nitrogen oxides, diesel exhaust, ozone, particulate matter, and other pollutants.
The results of all endeavors have been published in over 200 Research Reports and Special Reports. At the urging of the World Health Organization and countries throughout the world, HEI has extended its international research to help inform air quality decisions in Europe, Asia, and elsewhere.
Daniel Greenbaum is also a Trustee of the Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities (CAI-Asia).
