Hangin’ Around
Last Friday, students from various schools, as well as youth Eco-Groups gathered for this year’s Clean Air Month celebration.
Dubbed as “Hangin’ Around! Schools Act for Cleaner Airâ€, the sympoisum aimed to empower schools and youth organizations to become clean air advocates and strengthen their role in air pollution prevention activities.
Included in the afternoon’s activities was a colorful parade of the school and youth delegates wearing costumes and props that depict different ways to clean the air. This was followed by a variety program with creative performances and talks by youth representatives tackling local initiatives of the youth in cleaning the air and taking care of the environment. Then, there’s the signing of a youth commitment board for clean air by participating schools and youth
organizations will be done to conclude the event.

Just recently schools, cities and municipalities have lined up activities to celebrate the Clean Air month, among them including an orchestrated campaign to ban the entry of smoke-belching vehicles on their campuses, city and municipal halls last November 16.
To date, a total of 80 schools and 24 youth organizations and 45 cities and municipalities have already pledged their support to the campaign.

Also part of the campaign was the recent issuance by Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno of a Memorandum Circular No. 2007-131 launching the Linis Hangin sa Siyudad/Munisipyo Program. Under the Program, local Chief Executives are encouraged to actively support the campaign against air pollution in their localities.
Among the local government units that continue to participate in the campaign are, for Metro Manila, Valenzuela Pasig, QuezonCity, Makati, Marikina. In the CALABARZON are, Lucena, Quezon, Pagbilao, Teresa, Cainta, Rizal, Batangas City, Cavite, Sta. Cruz - Laguna, Biñan – Laguna. In the province of Batangas, the municipalities that will join the celebration are Talisay, Alitagtag, Taal, Laurel, Cuenca, Balete, Lipa, Tanawan and Mataas na Kahoy. For CAR,
participating LGUs are Baguio City, Bontoc, Mt. Province, Bangued, Abra, La Trinidad and Benguet. For Region 8, the participating LGUs are Maasin City, Tacloban City, Ormoc City, Catbalogan City, Borongan City, Baybay City, and Naval in Biliran. Others inclue Koronadal City, South Cotabato Province and Butuan City.
The activity is jointly organized by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) together with the USAID-Energy and Clean Air Project, in cooperation with the University of Sto. Tomas, the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines and the Philippine Association of Tertiary Level Educational
Institutions in Environmental Protection. The Asia-Pacific Roundtable for Sustainable Consumption and Production – Youth Sector and the San Miguel Corporation are also assisting the event.
