Earth Day Preps..

Just got back from the SM Mall of Asia where we did an occular of the place where we intend to have the free respiratory check-ups for drivers and transport operators. It’s going to be part of the celebration being prepared here in the country, for the Earth Day on April 22.

It’s just an initial inspection, and we talked with some of the drivers present, so we would have an idea on what ‘treatment’ they would want. We would be bringing in doctors from the Lung Center of the Philippines (our partner since the BagatHangin Musikahan last year), and they would be providing their services for free.

Picture shows the tentative location, although most likely, it’s gonna be “the” location — to be nearer our target audience. Also with us earlier is Ava, from USAID’s Energy and Clean Air Project.

Aside from the free check-up, there’s gonna be a few more happenings lined up that day at SM. Also in the plans are the fluvial parade, as well as the awarding of the model barangays on eco-waste management.

Speaking of SM, I finally got another of that biodegradable bags they have now. I was itching to blog about it weeks ago, but i lost the first bag i got. Went to the week after, but they have the red biodegradable bags instead. Last Saturday, I finally got one, so let me show you both…

The mall also has a Trash to Cash program, waste markets, and also features the segregation streamers of UNDP — and I must say, they’re at the forefront of the greenmalls campaign. Kudos to SM!

    Hi Iva,
I’ve talked with some taxi drivers whose taxis were using LPG instead of gasoline. Some of them expressed their concern about the effects of the fumes on their health, which according to them is more affected when using LPG instead of the usual gasoline. Perhaps you could address this too when you do your check ups on April 22. Don’t forget the Tour of the Fireflies on April 20 too. Have a nice day!

    Kuya,

Will inform the doctors, kuya.. I actually heard a driver complained about it — the feeling of “dryness”, to be exact. Will tell the doctors.. As for the fireflies, yes, that would be on April 20, along with Isang Diwa. Will blog about the earth day activities once finalized. :)

Hello Iva. Great to see the effort your group is putting to prepare for Earth Day. I saw a campaign in Australia also that educates the people on carbon emission by home appliances represented by black balloons. It can really get you concern while watching. I think that can also help if done in the Philippines to create awareness on how polluted our environment is today.

Hi, miss janette.. heard that some in the country are against the use of balloons for environmental propaganda. they’re cute on air, yes, but once on ground, they’ll just end up as, well, garbage. still on the prep-work. will update about the earthday celeb soon.
