New 7 Wonders of Nature

3 April 2008 24 Comments

Calling everybody to check the New7Wonders site, and vote for our own Chocolate Hills, Mayon Volcano, Tubbataha Reef , and Puerto Princesa’s Underground River (Subterranean National Park) for the New 7 Wonders of Nature Search.

Quoting from the new7wonders site,

“So many breathtakingly beautiful, natural places are still quite unknown to many. From waterfalls to fjords, rainforests to mountain peaks, freshwater lakes to salt flats, we are discovering together the incredible beauty and variety of our planet.”
- Mr. Bernard Weber, New7Wonders Founder and President

So, let us show the world the beauty that we have here in our country. Voting for nominees will continue through December 31, 2008, afterwards a list of 21 finalists will emerge, subject to popular vote. Let’s make sure the Philippines is in it!

To vote, here are the very easy steps:

1. Go to: http://www.new7wonders.com/nature/en/vote_on_nominees/
2. Register, and then select the Philippine entries as among your 7 nominees (Choose Asia, then look for the Philippines entries).
3. Check your email and confirm through the link sent to you by “Webmaster New7Wonders”.

… and to know even more about our nominees, check out their sites.

CHOCOLATE HILLS
bohol.jpg bohol2.jpg
Found in Bohol, the Chocolate Hills look like giant mole hills, or as some say, women’s breasts, and remind us of the hills in a small child’s drawing. Most people who first see pictures of this landscape can hardly believe that these hills are not a man-made artifact. However, this idea is quickly abandoned, as the effort would surely surpass the construction of the pyramids in Egypts. The chocolate hills consist of are no less than 1268 hills (some claim this to be the exact number). They are very uniform in shape and mostly between 30 and 50 metres high. They are covered with grass, which, at the end of the dry season, turns chocolate brown. From this color, the hills derive their name. At other times, the hills are green, and the association may be a bit difficult to make.

MAYON VOLCANO
mayon2.jpg mayon.jpg
Five hundred fifty three(553) kilometers from Manila, the capital city of the Philippines, rises a near perfect cone volcano and one of the seven wonders in the world, the famous Mayon Volcano. Its summit measures 2,421 meters above sea level (masl) while its circular base has a radius of about 48 kilometers. Mayon Volcano is surrounded by five (5) municipalities and three (3) cities with a total land area of 5,775.70 hectares. Its symmetrical form at any horizontal direction made this volcano a truly scenic wonder.

TUBBATAHA REEF
tubbatahabystewartsy.jpg tubbatahabytommyschultz.jpg
Tubbataha is a reef ecosystem made up of two atolls located in the middle of the Sulu Sea. It is a sanctuary for marine life. The reefs lie on the Cagayan Ridge, a line of extinct underwater volcanoes which starts from the north at the Sultana Shoal and ends in the south at the San Miguel Islands. It is located 92 nautical miles southeast of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan and 80 nautical miles southwest of Cagayancillo, the municipality that exercises political jurisdiction over it. It was proclaimed as a National Marine Park on August 11, 1988 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage in 1993, in recognition of its outstanding universal value in terms of marine life species diversity and richness.

UPDATE:

Got an email from my friend, Voltaire Acosta, to inform that Puerto Princesa’s Underground River (Subterranean National Park) is now on the list of nominees. It’s a late addition so all the more that we need to vote for it.

puertoprincesa.jpg
The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is one of the most important conservation areas in the Philippines. It was created to protect the impressive cave systems, lush old growth tropical rainforest, interesting wildlife and unspoiled natural beauty of the area. Its main focus is 8.2 km. long underground river that flows beneath a spectacular limestone formation before directly emptying into the sea.

why is it that the chocolate hills has been removed from the entire list of nominees? what’s the problem? isn’t it valid? that would be a bummer cause i’m really looking forward to it as a part of the 7 wonders of nature. that also includes puerto princesa and tubbataha reef.

i guess these are just technical problems. there are days the sites would appear in the list, days they dont. maybe it’s a strategy on the part of the sevenwonders site — or, part of the surprise.

The whole archipelago of the Philippines is indeed a natural wonder of the world by itself. Aside from the four nominees from the Philippines, there are still a lot of places in the country that deserves to be included for the search of the 7 natural wonders of the world such as El Nido’s Bacuit Bay in the Province of Palawan where you can find the towering limestone cliffs, pristine beaches and more than eight hundred species of fish. Go Philippines…
