Green Video and Computer Games

Are computer and video games effective environmental education tools?

Not that we have any — in fact, i doubt if we have one here in the country. You see, a lot of children (the youth, young adults, and yes, even the oldies), are into gaming — gameboy, playstation 3, and network sites applications are hot.

Take, for example, the apps “farmtown” and “farmville”. A lot of people are hooked, and it’s about farming (harvesting and plowing), and taking care of animals, and cleaning each other’s farm lots. It’s family-oriented, kid-friendly, and you learn while you’re playing these games. Maybe, people who are in the gaming industry could develop games that would be kind of “advocacy”, like having to attack garbage monsters (ala Basura Monster of Ms. Bersola), or that of USAID’s eco-warriors.

Learning about the environment doesnt really have to be boring for kids after all..
