Reusable Bags on Wednesdays!

3 October 2010 2 Comments

Pagba-BAG ko, Pagbabago!

Several of the country’s top malls and supermarkets signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC) with Earth Day Philippines Network (EDNP) for the use of Reusable Bags during Wednesdays!

These establishments are the Philippine Amalgamated Supermarkets Association (PAGASA), the Philippine Retailers Association (PRA), Ayala Malls, Ever Malls, Hi-Top Supermarket, Isetann Malls, Makro, Robinson’s Supermart, Savemore, SM Hypermart and SM Supermarkets.

Of course, SM has been doing this for quite some time now, having been almost the mall leader as far as the use of green bags is concerned. Love this project since lots of plastics will be saved, all we have to do is bring our own bags.

Anyway, these are the things that are included in the agreement:

- Malls and supermarkets should promote the reusable bags in accordance with their promotion and creativity initiatives (i’ve noticed stalls in SM have their green bags cutely displayed. Probably part of their scheme)

- Observe every “Wednesday” as “Reusable Bag Day” by not providing free plastic bags or charging a fee for plastic bags during Wednesdays

- Give incentives to clients for using reusable bags (maybe discounts? yipee!)

- Promote the campaign through posters posted in conspicuous places in their supermarkets. (yeah, they can put large billboards with outdoor lighting and promote their green bags just like what sm does for their recyclable market events.. just suggesting..)

So there! Don’t forget to bring your reusable bags, guys! Let’s help clean the environment!

Great advocacy! We can help the Mother Nature by doing this project. Hopefully this establishments are really true to this and just a media mileage.

I agree.. Also, Earth Day Network Philippines clarified it’s not mandatory — I mean the choice of “Wednesday” as Reusable Bag Day. Some are having it on Mondays. It’s up to them to decide as long as there’s one in a week.
