Cleaning Metro Manila Air
Cleaning the air is everyone’s concern… right now, as everyone goes green, let’s take a look on some local government units who have gone to be models for clean air.
Local governments form solid part of the Metro Manila Campaign for Cleaner Air. For one, Makati City has an ordinance banning smoking in all public areas. Violators are fined P1,000 for the first offense, P2,000 for the second offense and P3,000 or imprisonment for the third offense.
It also implements the Healthy Air in Good Indoor Environment (HANGIN) Project which aims to fill the gaps that limit the identification of relationship between severity of air pollution and health effects of exposed communities in Metro Manila.
Marikina City, on the other hand, promotes Cycling for Clean Air – a bikeways program that is a holistic social and advocacy campaign that promotes cycling as an alternative transport. If you go there, you’ll see a lot of bike lanes, they even have this program where they give loans to people so they could get their own bikes. I just hope everything gets back to normal cause Marikina has been totally ravaged by Ondoy. Haaaay.
These two local government units show that if there’s political will, and if the people are willing to follow the laws, we’d be able to clean the air. Afterall, it’s easy… think of it like taking the best diet pill for clean air — like quitting smoking, or cutting the smoke emission of our vehicles through proper maintenance. It’s easy, right?
