Oxo-Degradable Plastic

Reduce, reuse, and recycle — this is one of the easiest (but tricky) way we could do to help save the environment… and I’m happy that the country’s largest bookstore gets to share with their customers, the 3Rs.

I just got home from the mall, got myself a book from the National Bookstore (no, not about fat burners that work, but on “energy healing” hehe). Anyway, when I checked the “plastic” that was used to wrap my purchase, I was surprised to see that they had converted from ordinary to an “oxo-degradable” one. I’m not sure what it meant, I thought it must be biodegradable but on another level, so I checked and here’s what I got:

oxo-degradable. oxobiodegradable, oxo-degradable Unlike ‘normal’ plastics, that degrade and disintegrate very slowly, oxo-biodegradable plastics are manufactured to accelerate the destruction of the plastic product, preferably extending the destruction to the extent where the plastic is mineralized into its basic component elements. (source: encyclo.co.uk)

Well, I hope it is true… cause there have been so many biodegradable plastics now but we cant really be sure if they really do disintegrate eventually. But it really is good that more and more businesses are going the green way.

By the way, the NBS plastic also says “Reduce Earth’s Destruction: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”. Here’s hoping more would follow suit.
