Celebrate Clean Air with a Call for a Car-Free Day

Here’s a video prepared by the Clean Air Asia to promote our Car-Free Day event this Sunday. Song’s “Halina” by Clean Air Champ, artist Lou Bonnevie — official music video will also be launched on that day at the street concert we’ve organized. She’s bringing along True faith, Mayonnaise, the Drum Circle and some more… so come and jam with us (3-6pm).

Anyway, here’s the press release I prepared for the event. Forward it as you wish.

DENR, MMDA, NGOs Support Call for Car-Free Day

Join thousands of clean air advocates on November 25 as they gather and move from the Ayala Triangle in Makati City to Ortigas Avenue in Pasig City, to call for cleaner air and better health.

The event, dubbed “Clean Air? Pwede!!!” campaigns for at least one Car-Free Day in Metro Manila’s roads every November as National Clean Air Month, primarily to lessen air pollution in its busy thoroughfares. The event is being initiated by the Partnership for Clean Air, a multisectoral body that includes the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, through its Environmental Management Bureau, the Metro Manila Development Authority, the local governments of Makati and Pasig, Department of Transportation and Communications, Philippine Information Agency, Laguna Lake Development Authority, civil society organizations (such as Miriam P.E.A.C.E., Earth Day Jam Foundation, Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines, The Firefly Brigade, Clean Air Initiative-Asia, Youth Vote, Ateneo School of Government, Earth Day Network), among them, to serve as advocacy campaign for the provision of an efficient and ecologically-friendly public transport system and increase awareness on the need to build walkable, pedestrian-friendly streets and infrastructures. Likewise assisting the event are: Ayala Land, Inc., Petroleum Institute of the Philippines, Manila Water, Boysen Philippines, among them.

DENR Secretary Ramon Paje states that motor vehicles remain the country’s major source of air pollution in the urban areas, and that there is a need to consider the use of non-motorized transport. He said that the DENR supports all LGUs like Makati and Pasig advocating for a day without cars as this would reduce air pollution.

“As we always say, rehabilitating our environment is not the monopoly of the DENR alone. The more people get involved, even if it is just as simple as biking to work, or not using our cars for a day, the faster we clean our earth”, Paje added.

The car-free day campaign will also urge businesses to provide safe and secured walkways (such as Ayala walkway, Ortigas walkway), urge the government to provide safe and accessible spaces such as bicycle lanes and pavements for pedestrian, as well as promote the improvement of mass transit. The campaign also seeks to educate the policies about the health benefits of walking, cycling and other non-motorized transport rides.

The activities will start at 6:00 a.m. at the Ayala Triangle, Makati City to be followed by a “Clean Air Parade” to Ortigas Center to be led by the Tour of the Fireflies and runners from Youth Vote Philippines, electric bus and jeepneys, hybrid bus, and an Ecological Fashion Show by the Miriam College. A Clean Air Concert by 4 pm, led by Clean Air Champion Lou Bonnevie (with her song “Halina, Sama-sama Tayo”) will also feature True Faith, Mayonnaise, Absolute Play, The Drum Circle, and some others of the country’s bands and artists by 4 pm.
